Thats the $64,000 question, the truth is nobody ever really knows. There is an average that the DVSA use to try and quantify it of roughly 45hrs of tuition and 20hrs of practice on average, but those are just numbers. The reality is, if you are starting from scratch with no prior experience it will take longer to get to grips with it - if you have done some prior learning, maybe with family or maybe you ride a bikes or even horses you will have some road experience that you can use and therefore the number of hours to reach proficiency on the road will reduce.
What do I need to bring with me to the first lesson?
Not much really, you should always bring your provisional license with you to each appointment anyway, glasses/contacts should you need them and I would always advise comfortable but firm footwear (chunky sole shoes tend to cause problems with feeling the pedals, so try and avoid them for driving).
What if I have to cancel a lesson?
You will receive an automated text 48hrs before each lesson, if you need to cancel a lesson as long as you let me know before this time it’s not a problem. Once the text goes out, If you need to cancel within this time I reserve the right to charge you for the lesson in full.
Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can take lessons?
It’s not necessary, but it’s not such a bad idea to at least get started on the study. I can also help you with unlimited access to a smartphone app called ‘Theory Test Pro’, most apps are either limited or need to be paid for so you can save yourself a few quid here when you start taking lessons.
Can I practise with friends/family?
Absolutely and I encourage it after you have got to grips with the basics in a dual controlled car. Imagine you were taking lessons to play the piano, how much quicker would you learn and better would you get if you had access to a piano at home? There are many companies who offer facilities like dual controlled cars or even short term insurance on friends/family cars like www.wearemarmalade.co.uk or www.collingwoodinstuctors.co.uk. Both of these companies may also offer you a better rate if you use my affiliation code 616834, so why not!
