Frequently asked questions...
Learning to drive can feel like a big step, and it’s normal to have a few questions along the way.
Below are some straightforward answers to help you understand how lessons work and what to expect.
Where do lessons start and finish?
-
Lessons usually start and finish at your home, school, or workplace within the PH1 or PH2 postcode areas. If you’re based outside of this but happy to travel into Perth city centre, get in touch and we can see what works.
How long are the lessons?
-
Lessons are available in 1, 1.5, or 2-hour sessions, depending on what suits you and current diary availability.
How do I book lessons?
-
Lessons are booked using an open diary system, similar to a hairdresser. You choose times that suit you based on current availability, giving you flexibility to fit lessons around your schedule. Popular times go quickly, especially evenings and weekends, so booking ahead is recommended.
What are your lesson prices?
-
Lessons are £40 per hour. A 5% discount is available when you add credit to your account in advance, this is the best value option. Pay-as-you-go is also available if you prefer flexibility.
How do I pay for lessons?
-
Payment is preferred online or by bank transfer at least 48 hours before your lesson.
-
Cash or card in the car is also fine, but in this case you’ll be asked to pay for your next lesson at the same time, so that all lessons are always paid in advance.
What is your cancellation policy?
-
At least 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or rearrange a lesson. I’ll always do my best to fill the space where possible, but more notice gives the best chance of avoiding a charge.
-
I understand that sometimes things happen—genuine situations will always be treated with a bit of common sense.
Do you offer block bookings?
-
Not in the traditional sense. Instead, you can add credit to your account in advance, which gives you the same benefit as block booking—along with a 5% discount—while keeping full flexibility to book lessons that suit your schedule.
Do you offer intensive courses?
-
Intensive courses can work well for some learners, but they’re not the right fit for everyone. At the moment, limited driving test availability makes it difficult to run true “start-to-finish” intensive courses.
-
If you already have a test booked and can drive to a reasonable standard, a short, focused course to sharpen your skills may be possible. Get in touch and we can talk through what would work best for you.
Can you book my driving test for me?
-
It’s best that you book your own driving test directly. This ensures all details are correct and gives you full control over your test date.
What happens on test day?
-
We’ll usually have a short warm-up drive before heading to the test centre. The test lasts around 40 minutes and includes general driving, some independent driving (following signs or a sat nav), and one manoeuvre.
-
You’ll also be asked one “show me, tell me” vehicle safety question. At the end, the examiner will talk you through the result and any feedback.
What do you expect from me as a learner?
-
Turn up on time
-
Be ready to learn
-
Practise between lessons where possible (“passenger seat university”)
-
Ask questions if you’re unsure
Learning to drive is a team effort—we’ll get the best results when we both put in the work.
What if I make mistakes?
-
You will—and that’s exactly how you learn. Lessons are the place to make mistakes safely, understand them, and improve from them.
-
Every driver you see on the road has been through the same process.
Do you shout at learners?
-
No—shouting doesn’t help anyone learn. Lessons are calm, focused, and supportive. You’ll be challenged when needed, but always in a way that helps you improve, not knocks your confidence.
Can my parents come on lessons?
-
Yes, that’s absolutely fine. They’re welcome to sit in and observe if it helps you feel more comfortable or supports your learning.
-
That said, lessons tend to work best with clear communication between you and me, so we’ll keep the focus on you.
Do you use dual controls?
-
Yes—the car is fitted with dual controls for your safety and mine. They’re there as a backup if needed, but the aim is always for you to be in full control of the car.
My dad learned in 10 hours—why does it take around 45 now?
-
Driving—and the standards expected—have changed a lot over the years. Today it’s not just about moving the car, but making safe, consistent decisions in busy, modern traffic.
-
Everyone learns at their own pace, but the goal isn’t just to pass your test—it’s to be confident and capable on your own afterwards.
