The 2nd glance......

Most drivers who pull out into another vehicle, or fail to spot a motorcyclist at a junction, will tell you the same thing afterwards: I looked, but I didn't see them.

 

It's tempting to hear that as an excuse. It isn't. It's a description of a real and well-documented failure mode in road safety research, known as "looked but failed to see" — LBFTS. The driver's eyes genuinely moved to the right place. The motorcyclist, the cyclist, the pedestrian, was genuinely in their field of view. And the brain still didn't register it.

 

That's a strange thing to sit with as an instructor, because so much of early driving tuition is built around the idea that looking is the safety behaviour — mirror, signal, manoeuvre; look before you move off; check your blind spot. All true, all necessary. But looking and seeing are not the same act, and the second one is where the real work happens.

 

Why looking isn't enough

 

Your eyes don't work like a camera, recording everything in front of the lens. They work like a search engine that's already decided what it's looking for. When you scan a junction, your brain isn't passively absorbing the scene — it's actively hunting for the kind of thing it expects to find there, based on what junctions like this one have usually contained before. If the road is normally quiet at that time of day, "quiet" is what your brain is primed to confirm.

 

This is what researchers call inattentional blindness: when attention is narrowly focused — on a search task, on a stressor, on the next manoeuvre — things that are visible but unexpected can simply fail to register. It isn't a question of reduced eyesight. It's a question of mental bandwidth, and it happens to attentive, careful drivers as often as careless ones. That's part of what makes it unsettling: this isn't a problem you fix by telling someone to "concentrate harder." Most LBFTS drivers genuinely believed they were concentrating.

 

There's a second, more physical contributor worth knowing about, particularly at junctions: the A-pillars on either side of your windscreen, which exist to protect you in a rollover, are wide enough to hide an entire approaching vehicle if the angles line up badly. This isn't a minor or theoretical risk — in one detailed study of junction collisions where drivers reported not seeing a pedestrian, over a third involved a vehicle's A-pillar physically obscuring the person who was hit. A single glance can pass straight across that gap and miss what's sitting behind it.

 

What the second glance actually does

 

None of this means looking is pointless. It means a single look is a first draft, not a final answer — and the second glance is where you go back and check the draft against what's actually there, rather than what you expected to be there.

 

Practically, that means a few things. It means treating "the road looks clear" as a hypothesis, not a conclusion — and giving yourself a beat to actively test it rather than confirm it. It means moving your head, not just your eyes, so you're checking around the pillar rather than through the same fixed gap a second time. And it means recognising that the few seconds you spend on a junction aren't dead time before the manoeuvre — they're part of the manoeuvre.

 

This is, in the end, a small habit with a disproportionate payoff. It costs you a second, maybe two. It asks nothing of your mechanical skill behind the wheel. What it asks for is a shift in how you treat your own first impression of a scene — not as something to trust automatically, but as something worth checking once more before you commit. That's not a counsel of anxiety. It's the opposite: it's what lets you pull away calmly, having actually looked, rather than quickly, having only glanced.
